Ernst studied biology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and also has a long record in Media. He was the science and society editor of Folia Civitatis, the weekly Newspaper of the UvA and photographer for this and other Dutch papers from 1974 – 1977. His cartoons about gene- mutations and the environment became very popular.

He studied Media, including video production, at UvA for his MSc in Biology Education.

 He worked as a neuro-science researcher at the Pharmacological Laboratory of the UvA, as a classroom teacher, participated as a bone specialist in an archeological excavation in Syria, became a science teacher trainer, and worked as an educational project manager in various countries in Sub Sahara Africa. 

All the time his interest in the media were part of the approach to skills development. Culminating in full-time work as a Video Film Producer.

At the University of Botswana, from 1978 – 1988,  he was as commissioning editor heavily involved in the production of 15 video films on science based careers.

As Head of Science and Technology at the Zimbabwe Open University (1998-2002), he was a warded a Grant to establish a digital video film studio by UNESCO and by the Dutch Government. 

He organized a training program for ZOU staff, using on-line resources and a Diploma programme in Film Production from Ohio University in Athens, USA. 

The result was the production of a number of educational video films for ZOU, in collaboration with staff and students from the Regional Video film Training Project of the UNESCO in Harare.

Coming back to Botswana in 2002 he established the Camelthorn Media for Development Trust and became its CEO.

The key to the success of CMT is his passion, a profound interest and extensive research in the background and content of the subject, together with collaboration of the best professionals in Film available in Botswana and the SADC region.
